Iran’s Fordo Nuclear Plant. The US attack damaged its entrance. Source- Planet Labs
The US attacked Iran’s Fordo nuclear site on 21 June last week. In this attack, the US used the “bunker buster” bombs of the GBU-57 series weighing 30,000 pounds for the first time. These bombs are specially designed to destroy deep bunkers and sites built under the ground.
US Army Chairman Lt Gen Dan Kane said on Thursday that it took 15 years to make these bombs. In 2009, when America came to know about Iran’s Fordo Site, they had no right weapon to destroy it. After this, the US developed these powerful bombs.
The US attacked 3 nuclear bases in Iran with a 7 B-2 bomber. The B-2 bomber dropped more than a dozen GBU-57 bunker buster bombs on the Fordo and Natanj site.

Attack at a speed of 1000 feet per second
The name of the US attack on Iran was Operation Midnight Hammer. Two main ventilation shafts of the Fordo site were targeted in this attack. Iran had tried to shut down these shafts with concrete, but the US army had already prepared it.
The first bomb was used to break the concrete, which opened the shaft. The four bombs were then dropped on the main shaft, which fell inside the site at a speed of 1,000 feet per second and exploded vigorously.
General Kane said that this operation included 15 years of hard work. Pilots, weapon -making teams and load crew together made the attack successful.
GBU -57 Bunker Bomb – World’s most powerful weapon
GBU-57 is also called Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a bomb that can explode by penetrating 60 meters (200 feet) below the ground. This bomb is specially designed to destroy deep bunkers and safe locations.
Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Masao Dahgren said that the bomb has a thick steel layer, which can break inside by breaking the rocks and concrete. It also has a special fuse, which explodes at the right time even after heavy pressure and shocks.

B-2 aircraft can be dropped from GBU-57 bomb
This bomb can only be dropped by B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber aircraft. B-2 is an aircraft that can dodge the enemy’s strong defense system and fly up to 9,600 kilometers without stopping.
On June 21, the US used 7 B-2 aircraft in an attack on Iran’s atomic sites. It was the largest B-2 attack in American history and the second longest B-2 mission.
General Dan Kane said that some B-2 aircraft were sent to the Pacific Ocean to distract the enemy’s attention, while the real attack aircraft went in another direction. It was a secret planning, about which only a few people knew.
