
Superboys of Malegaon
Australia’s first National Indian Film Festival may end this week. Following unprecedented tours of seven cities including Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, the festival ended on 2 March 2025 with Red Carpet Gala and Tannishtha Chatterjee’s finishing night screening at Rome Rome. Superboys of Malegaon, directed by Zoya Akhtar and starring Reema Kagti, won the Best Film Award in the first edition of Australia’s National Indian Film Festival.
A look at the winners
Anuj Gulati’s Wingman (The Universal Irni of Love) won the Best Indie feature film award, while the Parikrama of the famous filmmaker Gautam Ghosh won the best international Indian film. Director Anant Narayan Mahadevan’s The Man Hu Hurls News won the Best Documentary (Short) Award. Other winners include Valavan Velmurugan’s best short film and The Garmentologist’s Best Short Film: Special Mention for The Last Show. The recipient of the post-production perfection grant was Mistyi Raja Chatterjee. Uri Ramayanam, mother of Badrappa Gajula, won the award for the best documentary feature.

Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon won the Best Film Award. “I would like to thank Australia’s National Indian Film Festival as Superboys of Malegaon for choosing as the best film and showing it in cities across Australia, helping the film reach the wider audience.
What is Nifa?
With the inauguration of NIFFA Regional, which will first bring Indian cinema to regional Australia, and the festival will continue to celebrate the festival with a re -screening of some films in Dandy Cinema in the coming weeks. For those who did not know, let us tell you that the NIFFA winners were announced by the All-Female Nomination Council, Festival Director Anupam Sharma and Peter Casthlis.
