UPI Rules: From e-rickshaw to vegetable shops, people nowadays pay from UPI everywhere. Payment from UPI in India has become a part of people’s lives. At the same time, a news has come about UPI payment. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a new circular about UPI transactions, which will be applicable from February 1, 2025.

What is new rules

According to the new rules of the National Payments Corporation of India, transactions with IDs made from special characters will not be done from February 1. Users will be accepted only by the ID made through alphanumeric characters. At the same time, those who do not follow it, the ID of such people will be blocked. According to the new rules, the UPI ID with special characters like #, @, $, or * will be blacklisted. In recent years, Unified Payments Interfaces or UPI have replaced a large -scale cash, which has emerged as a major transaction medium. People use it for both small and big transactions, from grocery purchases to railway tickets.

UPI transaction is increasing day by day

By December 2024, the number of UPI transactions had reached 16.73 billion, which increased by 8% compared to the previous months. India’s Tier 1 is at the forefront of UPI transactions. However, with this increasing use, the UPI -related scams and fraud have also increased, causing reports of dent in people’s bank accounts as well. To increase the security of UPI ecosystem, NPCI has implemented this new rule, which is now mandatory for all UPI users.

What does NPCI’s circular say?

If you are dependent on UPI for transactions then this update is very important for you. According to NPCI circular, the UPI ID should no longer have special characters. From February 1, only number (0-9) and alphabet (AZ) can be included in the UPI ID. At present, many users have special characters in the UPI ID and they have to update their ID immediately to continue using UPI. The purpose of this remedy is to strengthen digital security and ensure uninterrupted functioning of UPI ecosystem.

NPCI issued this circular on 9 January, stating that the rule should be strictly followed. This means that if you have a character in your UPI ID, you will not be able to pay from February 1 and your transactions will fail automatically.
