New Delhi: The police department of the country has less than 1,000 women in senior posts like DGP and SP and 90 percent of women in the police department are working as constables. The report ‘The India Justice Report 2025’ has been prepared by the Tata Trust with the help of many civil society organizations and data partners. In this report, the status of states in four areas like Police Department, judiciary, jail and legal aid has been assessed. According to the report, despite increasing awareness about the need for gender diversity in law enforcement, not a single state or union territorial police department has been able to meet its goal of representing women.
Only 960 women ranked IPS
The report also underlined gender inequalities in the police seniority. According to the report, out of a total of 2.4 lakh women personnel in the police department, only 960 women are ranked IPS. At the same time, 24,322 women are working in the posts of non-IPS officers like DSP, Inspector or Sub-Inspector. The authorized number of IPS officers is 5,047. Around 2.17 lakh women are working as constables in the police department.
Most women in DSP post in MP
Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of women in the post of DSP, where their number is 133. According to the report, about 78 percent of police stations now have women help desks, 86 percent of jails have video conferencing facility and per capita expenditure on legal aid has almost doubled between 2019 to 2023 to Rs 6.46. During the same period, the share of women in the district judiciary has also increased to 38 percent. However, Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) have only 5% and 14% respectively in the district judiciary. (With language inputs)
