The Government of India has issued several necessary instructions in view of the increased tension between India and Pakistan after Operation Sindoor. The Ministry of Defense has entrusted a big responsibility to the Chief of Army Staff. In view of India’s growing military preparations, the Ministry of Defense has taken an important step. The Ministry of Defense has expanded the powers of the army chief amid growing tension along the northern and western border with Pakistan. Along with this, the Territorial Army has also been instructed to gather for deployment. In such a situation, the deployment of Territorial Army officers and nomination personnel will also be done.
Defense Minister’s instructions
According to Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rules 1948, the government has authorized the Chief of Territorial Army to call every officer and enrolled personnel of the Territorial Army and give responsibility to them as per the notification of 6 May 2025. The instructions especially include all the major commands of the Indian Army, including southern, eastern, western, central, northern, south-west, Andaman and Nicobar and Army Training Command (ARTRAC), which has been approved to include 14 of the existing 32 infantry battalions of the Territorial Army for deployment. What is a Territorial Army?
Territorial Army (Territorial Army) is a part-time military force of India, also known as the force of “Citizen Soldiers”. This is the part of the army in which ordinary citizens, who are employed in a profession, perform military duty when needed to serve the country. It is a voluntary force. Its members are usually in civil jobs or business. When needed, such as war, emergency or internal disturbance, then they are called for active service. Its purpose is to reduce the burden on regular army.
When does the Territorial Army need?
It was used in wars of 1962, 1965, 1971 in war or emergency. They are also used for relief work during natural disasters floods, earthquakes, etc. The Territorial Army is also brought forward in internal security or law and order situation. The Territorial Army is also required to support the big event/national emergency. Many times they are also used as additional security forces on the border. The Territorial Army also gets respect, rank, and medals just like other military forces.
What is the scale and process of admission to the Territorial Army
To be admitted to the Territorial Army, there should be no less than 18 years of age. For this, it is mandatory to be a graduate from a recognized university. Government, private or self -employment, it is mandatory for the candidate to work in some or the other profession. The selection process is completed only after written examination, interview, medical test. Many well-known people like Anurag Thakur, Sachin Pilot and MS Dhoni have been associated with the Territorial Army.

Serving the Territorial Army does not provide pension or full -time employment guarantee. After the appointment in the Territorial Army, any person usually starts his service from the post of lieutenant. When appointed for training or military service, Territorial Army officers get equal pay and allowances as regular army officers. Territorial Army gives citizens an opportunity to join the army and show dedication to the nation.
