This election will be decided in the meeting to be held on Tuesday, in which Sago will be elected to the post of president in place of Adile Sumariwala. Sumariwala had served on this post for a long time, but this time he cannot participate in the electoral process as he cannot contest elections under the National Sports Code.
Sagoo is the only candidate left.
Sagoo, 51, won the gold medal in shot put at the 2002 Busan Asian Games, where he finished first with a distance of 19.03 metres. Apart from this, Sagoo also represented India in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. As a representative of the Athletes Commission, he is a member of the current Executive Council and is also a member of the Senior Selection Committee. During this year’s general meeting, AFI senior vice president Anju Bobby George also withdrew her name, leaving Sagoo as the only presidential candidate. Anju Bobby George will continue as Senior Vice President for the second term.
He will be elected secretary
New office bearers will be elected for the next four years in the upcoming two-day AGM. During this period, elections will be held for various posts of AFI, but there was no need for elections for most of the posts. Sandeep Mehta is likely to be elected to the post of Secretary. He was currently the Senior Joint Secretary in the Executive Council. Besides, Jyotirmoy Sikdar, who won gold medals in 800m and 1500m at the 1998 Asian Games, will be given the post of joint secretary, while Stanley Jones of Telangana will serve as treasurer.
Sudha Singh, who won gold medal in 3000m steeplechase at the 2010 Asian Games, former 100m national record holder Rachita Mistry, Priyanka Bhanot, daughter of AFI Planning Commission Chairman Lalit Bhanot, and Harjinder Singh have been named as new members of the executive committee. . Thus, the upcoming elections in the Indian Athletics Federation will bring many important changes and new faces, who are expected to bring positive changes in the direction and condition of Indian athletics.
