Donald Trump may approve the bill after assuming power on January 20.
The House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Parliament, on Thursday passed a bill to ban the International Criminal Court (ICC). America has taken this step after the arrest warrant issued by the ICC against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
During voting on the bill, 243 MPs voted in its favor, while 140 MPs voted against it. Among those who supported were 198 MPs from the Republican Party and 45 from the Democratic Party. No Republican lawmakers opposed the bill.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant for war crimes, human rights violations and genocide in Gaza.
After passing the bill from the House, it will now be presented in the upper house, the Senate.
America has already banned ICC
America has already banned ICC. Earlier, Donald Trump had imposed sanctions on ICC in 2020 during his first term.
In fact, the ICC had started investigating the criminal activities of America in Afghanistan and Israel in Palestine. The Trump administration had imposed sanctions on ICC against this. However, these restrictions were later removed after Joe Biden became President.
After the bill was passed by the House on Thursday, Republican Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Brian Mast said that America is passing this law because a Kangaroo Court wants to arrest the PM of our ally Israel.
After the arrest warrant was issued against Netanyahu, many countries have adopted different stances.
ICC does not have the power to arrest
The ICC had issued a warrant against Netanyahu on November 21 last year. However, he does not have powers to make arrests. For this it depends on its member countries. He can exercise his authority only in those countries which have signed the agreement establishing this court.
International Criminal Court started in 2002
International Criminal Court i.e. ICC was started on 1 July 2002. This organization investigates war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity occurring around the world. This institution takes action on the basis of rules prepared on the Rome Agreement of 1998.
The headquarters of the International Criminal Court is in The Hague. 123 countries including Britain, Canada, Japan are members of the International Criminal Court under the Rome Agreement.
