Nimisha and Mahdi were partners in a private clinic in Yemen. It is alleged that Mahdi took Nimisha’s passport in his possession and used to torture her.

Blood money is now the last hope to save Nimisha’s life. However, the Government of India said in the Supreme Court on Monday that it cannot do much in the Nimisha Priya case.

  • In 2008, 19 -year -old Priya, a resident of Palakkad in Kerala, arrived at Yemen for a job. He got a nurse job in a government hospital in the capital Sana.
  • In 2011, Nimisha returned to India for marriage. He married Tommy Thomas, a resident of Kochi and both came to Yemen. Here Thomas got the job of the electrician’s assistant, but the salary was very low.
  • In 2012, Nimisha gave birth to daughter Mishal, but it became difficult to live Yemen.
  • In 2014, Thomas returned to Kochi with daughter, where he started running e-rickshaws. While Nimisha decided to open the clinic leaving a low salary job, but according to Yemen’s law, Nimisha needed a local partner.
  • During this, Nimisha met Mahdi, who runs a clothes shop. Mahdi’s wife was delivered by Nimisha.
  • In January 2015, Nimisha came to India to meet daughter Mishal. Mahdi also came to India with him.
  • During this, Mahdi stole a picture of Nimisha’s wedding. Later Mahdi claimed to be Nimisha’s husband by tampering with this picture.
  • To start the clinic, Nimisha collected about 50 lakh rupees from family members and friends and reached Yemen and started the clinic.
  • Nimisha started paper work to call her husband and daughter Yemen, but there was a civil war in March and they could not come to Yemen.

Due to civil war in Yemen, India started ‘Operation Relief’ to evacuate its citizens from there. The operation lasted till April-May 2015, in which 4,600 Indians and about one thousand foreign nationals were removed from Yemen, but only Nimisha could not return to India.

In 2016, Mahdi started harassing physical harassment with Nimisha. He also grabbed the profit of Nimisha’s clinic. When Nimisha questioned this, the relationship between the two deteriorated. Mahdi did not want to let Nimisha go out of Yemen, so she kept Nimisha’s passport with him.

Nimisha also lodged a complaint with the police, but the police took Nimisha into custody for 6 days, as Mahdi claimed to be Nimisha’s husband by showing edited photos.

Nimisha gave an overdose of drugs, killing Mahdi

Nimisha was very upset. In July 2017, Nimisha injected her unconsciousness to get a passport from Mahdi, but it did not affect. Nimisha then gave overdose to Mahdi, causing her death.

According to media reports, Nimisha pieces Mahdi’s body into the water tank. After this, the police arrested Nimisha.

Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council sentenced Nimisha to death for the murder of Mahdi. Nimisha filed an appeal for apology in the Supreme Court of Yemen, which was rejected in 2023. President Rashad also approved the sentence on 30 December 2024.

Trying to save Nimisha through blood money also

To forgive Nimisha, her mother also tried to raise blood money by selling her property and through crowdfunding.

In 2020, ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ was formed to protect Nimisha from punishment and collect blood money. A well-known businessman from Kerala announced to give Rs 1 crore to save Nimisha.

According to Sharia law, the victim side has the right to fix the punishment of criminals. There is a death sentence in the murder case, but the victim’s family can forgive the guilty by taking money. It is called ‘Diya’ or ‘Blood Money’, which is also mentioned in the Quran.
