Several months after the political coup in Bangladesh, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has finally demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from the Indian government and has written a letter for it. Let us tell you that Sheikh Hasina is living in exile in India after the coup in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina has been booked under several crimes in the interim government of Mohammad Yunus. Now the reaction of the Indian government has also come to light on this demand of Bangladesh.

How did India respond?

The Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India has reacted to Bangladesh’s demand for extradition of Sheikh Hasina. A spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs has said – “We confirm that we have received a note verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission today regarding the extradition request. At this time, we have no comment to give on this matter.”

Sheikh Hasina is in India since August 5

Amid violent protests in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country on 5 August 2024 and came to India by special plane. Since then she has been living in exile in India. Mohammad Yunus is taking charge of the interim government in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina left the country. During this period, there have been large scale attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. Due to this, relations between India and Bangladesh are becoming sour.

Bangladesh argued for extradition treaty

Bangladesh Home Ministry advisor Jahangir Alam has said that his office has sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry for the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Hasina. Its process is going on. Home Ministry advisor Jahangir Alam has claimed that an extradition treaty already exists between Dhaka and New Delhi. Under this treaty Sheikh Hasina can be brought back to Bangladesh.
