Digvesh Rathi trying to run Jitesh Sharma at the non -strike end.
In the season of IPL 2025, there has been a very controversial situation in league stage matches regarding some decisions of umpires. Even in the last league match of this season played between Lucknow Super Gynts and Royal Challengers Bangalore team, Jitesh Sharma was declared not out on the appeal of Mankad Run out by the third umpire, which should have been given out as per the rules. In this match between the two teams played at the Ekana Stadium, the Lucknow team batted first and gave RCB a target of 228 runs, after which RCB won the match in 18.4 overs and also confirmed their place for qualifier-1.
Decision reached third umpire on Digvesh Rathi’s appeal
When the RCB team was chasing the target, Digvesh Rathi was bowling the 17th over for Lucknow, in which he tried to run Jitesh Sharma on the last ball of his over. Digvesh was watching Jitesh Sharma leaving the crease before throwing the ball for a long time, after which he tried to run him out on the last ball. Field umpire Michael Goff entrusted this appeal by Digvesh Rathi to third umpire Ulhas Gandhi. When third umpire Gandhe saw this replay, he said that Digvesh Rathi had completed his delivery Struight and he overtook the popping crease. Keeping these things in mind, the third umpire pronounced the decision in favor of the batsman.
At the same time, Rishabh Pant, captain of Lucknow Super Jants team, had also withdrawn his appeal by talking to the field umpire. Now, according to the rules of IPL Rule Book and MCC, Jitesh Sharma should have been given out on this appeal, because Digvesh Rathi turns his hands 2 times during his bowling action and he did not complete his action.
IPL 2025 according to Rule 38.3.1
If the non-striker stays out of his crease at any time from the time of the ball coming into the game, when the bowler is expected to leave the ball normally, the non-strayer can be declared a run-out due to an attempt by the bowler to run out. In this situation, the non-strayer will be declared a run-out if he is out of his ground, when he is run out by the bowler to throw the ball at the wicket or hold the ball from the bowler’s hand, whether the ball was put later or not.
MCC Cricket Rules Section 38.3.1.1
The moment when the bowler is expected to leave the ball normally, he is defined as the moment when the bowler’s hand is leaving the ball in the delivery swing and at the time he runs out the non -striker, he will be called out. In such a situation, when we talk about Digvesh Rathi’s appeal, he did not reach his important point to release the ball in which he tried to dismiss his hand once and had no role in the popping crease. However, with the withdrawal of Rishabh Pant’s appeal, there is not much discussion on this entire controversy. At the same time, former umpire Anil Chaudhary has also reacted to this Mankad run out.
