Hearing in Supreme Court on CJI’s protocol dispute
During the recent Maharashtra visit of Chief Justice (CJI) of India, BR Gawai, a sharp debate was seen in a petition filed in the Supreme Court for protocol violations. The petition filed by a lawyer of the Supreme Court demanded an inquiry into the case, but the court reprimanded the petitioner, calling it an attempt to gain a ‘cheap popularity’.
Expressing his displeasure at the petitioner, Justice Suryakant’s bench said, “Why do you want to gain cheap popularity? CJI itself said that the matter should not be exaggerated. The officials have missed, the authorities have regretted it. CJI has accepted it.”
Justice Suryakant said in clear terms that the petition will be heard at 2:00 pm and the petition will be dismissed with a heavy fine.
What is the whole matter?
In fact, BR Gawai went on his first visit to his home state of Maharashtra after assuming the Chief Justice of India (CJI). A ceremony was held on 18 May in his honor, expressing disappointment over the absence of senior officials of the state, the CJI said that each part of the Constitution should give proper respect to another.
The CJI had said that for the first time a person from Maharashtra is coming to the state as the Chief Justice of India. If the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, the Director General of Police of the State or the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai do not find it necessary, they should think about it. On the case of protocol dispute, CJI said that it should not be deliberately exaggerated.
