What is Idtat system?

Under the Iddat system, a woman cannot marry another man for some time after the death or divorce of her husband. The duration of Iddat varies in different circumstances. If a pregnant woman is a widow or divorces, then the time of her Iddat stays until she gives birth to the child. It is also necessary for women to cover up other men during Iddat. During this time, there is also a ban on the decoration and grooming of the woman.

What will be changed with the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand?

  • After the implementation of UCC, registration of marriage will be mandatory.
  • There will be a similar law of divorce for any religion, caste or sect.
  • The minimum marriage age for girls of every religion and caste will be 18 years.
  • In all religions, the child will get the right to adopt, children of other religion cannot adopt.
  • Practices like Halala and Iddat in Uttarakhand will stop.

  • Boys and girls will share equal share in the property.

  • If the age of the live-in relationship is under 18 and 21 years, then the consent of the parents will have to be taken.
