The havoc of torrential rains continues in the northern districts of Kerala, which has shifted people in many areas to relief camps and safe places. According to reports, trees have been uprooted across the state due to heavy rains, affecting villages, towns and mountainous areas, while in many districts, the rise in water level of rivers and reservoirs has posed a threat to the residents there. In Mallappuram district, a well in a banana field suddenly collapsed due to heavy rains.

A well of Muhammad Ali Mukhakavil’s house collapsed. Due to heavy rains, the land of the farm became loose and suddenly the well collapsed on Monday. District officials said on Monday that several tribal families have been taken to relief camps from Pujkuni village of Sultan Bathri in Wayanad due to heavy rains continuing. He informed that relief camps have been opened in Bathri and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is also posted in the district.

Trees uprooted in Thrissur

Due to continuous rains in Thrissur district, the threat increased due to the widespread dislocation of trees and traffic was disrupted at various places, causing fire employees and police to face a lot of problems. Sources said that a tree has fallen up on the Thrissur-Guruvayur rail route and efforts are on to remove it. He said that due to strong winds and continuous rains, life has been disturbed in the height areas of Palakkad district including Attapadi and Nelliamathi areas. Sources said that due to heavy rains in Kozhikode district since Sunday, many people (from Kozhikode) have been taken to relief camps in neighboring Kozhikode district.

Alert issued in Kozhikode

The Kozhikode district administration has urged the local residents to be vigilant, as the water level of Poonur Puja has reached above the danger level in the colon and above the warning level in Kunnamangalam. The Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged people living on the banks of Koraapuzha (Kozhikode), Manimala River (Pathanamthitta), Vamanapuram (Thiruvananthapuram) and Kabini River (Wayanad) to be additional vigilance, as Orange and Yellow alert have been issued in the area. KSDMA sources reported that according to the latest pictures taken from the radar, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts are expected to blow medium to rapid rainfall and strong winds at speeds of 60 km/h.

Landslide warns issued

Sources said that in the next few hours, there is a possibility of moderate rains in Kollam, Alpuzha and Kasargod districts and strong winds at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour, as well as, there may be incidents of landslides. Meanwhile, government sources said that the talks between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and women from various regions on Tuesday in Kochi have been postponed due to rain situation in the state.
