Dehradun: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained its dominance in the urban local body elections in Uttarakhand on Saturday. Ruling party candidates won in 22 municipal bodies and were leading in nine. State Election Commission officials said that Congress won in 15 municipal bodies, while 13 independent candidates were also declared victorious. He said that Congress is leading in six municipal bodies, Independents in 10 and Bahujan Samaj Party in two municipal bodies.
Of the 100 urban local bodies for which voting took place on Thursday, results of 50 have been declared and trends of 27 are available. Counting of votes is still going on. In Dehradun, BJP’s mayoral candidate Saurabh Thapliyal is leading over his Congress rival Virendra Singh Pokhriyal. In Rishikesh Municipal Corporation, BJP’s Shambhu Paswan is leading over his nearest rival independent candidate Dinesh Chandra. BJP’s Asha Upadhyay is trailing independent candidate Aarti Bhandari in the state’s Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
Haldwani-Kathgodam Congress candidate ahead
In Almora Municipal Corporation, BJP candidate Ajay Verma is ahead of Congress’s Bhairav Goswami. In Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Corporation, Congress candidate Lalit Joshi is leading over BJP’s Gajraj Singh Bisht. In Haridwar Municipal Corporation, BJP candidate Kiran Jaisal is ahead of Congress’s Amresh Devi Balyan. Voting was held for 11 municipal corporations, 43 city councils and 46 nagar panchayats in Uttarakhand on Thursday, in which 65.4 percent voters exercised their franchise. A total of 5,405 candidates are in the fray, which includes 72 candidates for 11 mayor posts, 445 candidates for Municipal Council President and 4,888 candidates for Municipal Councilors and members.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated the victorious BJP candidates and said the party will implement the concept of clean and green cities by establishing a robust waste disposal system through urban local bodies.
