The US has announced to cancel Chinese students’ visas on a large scale. External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio said that the Ministry of External Affairs will work in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Rubio said that the visa of such Chinese students will be canceled, who are related to the Chinese Communist Party or who are studying in important areas.
He said, “We will further strict the investigation of visa applications coming from China and Hong Kong in future.” The US claims that this policy is necessary for national security. CCP can get sensitive information through students.
This step will reduce the number of Chinese students in the US and can increase the stress already existing between the two countries. This decision has come at a time when the US government has banned the new visa interview for foreign students.
At the same time, the Japanese government has asked local universities to consider admission to students returning from America.
Chinese students and Communist Party relations
The Chinese Communist Party is the only ruling party in China and has a profound impact on education, culture and society in the country. According to the US government, many Chinese students, especially those who go abroad for higher education, may be associated with CCP.
Many courses promoting CCP ideology are taught in Chinese universities. In some cases, CCP uses Chinese student organizations to monitor students studying abroad.
The Trump administration believes that some Chinese students may work to steal spy or technical information for CCP. Especially in areas that are sensitive to national security, such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and other advanced techniques.

- Economic loss: Chinese students are important income sources for American universities. In 2023–24, around 2,78,000 Chinese students spent more than $ 14.3 billion on US education. These policies can cause financial loss to universities.
- Reduction in educational relations: Educational exchange between the US and China is already decreasing. In 2019, 3,72,532 Chinese students were in the US, which declined to 2,78,000 in 2023-24. These policies can further increase this deficiency.
Trump banned student visa interview
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio on Tuesday issued an order to stop the interview. The objective of the order is to prevent Jewish opposition and leftist ideas in the universities of the country.
Rubio issued an order to American embassies around the world and said that they should not schedule new interviews for student visas, as the Trump government is going to tighten the investigation of the social media profiles of students coming to America.
He further said- With immediate effect, the Consular section should not allow the new appointment for the student or exchange visa (F, M and J) Visa until further guidelines are issued.
However, there may be pre -scheduled interviews, but new appointments will not be added to the list.
Officers are checking likes and comments on social media
This prohibition applies to F, M and J visa categories, which covers most international students and exchange visitors. It is claimed that students coming through these programs may be a threat to America or can promote the anti-Jewish environment.
The Trump government has also ordered the authorities to check posts, likes, comments and stocks on platforms like Instagram, Tickets and X, so that content that is considered a threat to national security can be detected.
According to The Guardian, the officials have been investigating the social media of the students from March, who were involved in pro -Palestine demonstrations. They are taking screenshots of posts that are considered derogatory, even if the content has been removed later.
However, in this order it is not clearly stated what will be seen in social media investigation in future. Earlier, social media investigation was applicable only to students who were involved in pro -Palestine demonstrations.
Admission of foreign students was also banned in Harvard
President Donald Trump has accused some universities of promoting leftist and anti -Jewish ideas. Last week, his government banned the admission of foreign students at Harvard University on this basis.
Regarding this, Christie Nom, Secretary, Homeland Security, USA wrote a letter to Harvard. In it, he wrote- ‘Trump administration blames Harvard to promote violence, anti-Jewish thinking and coordination with the Chinese Communist Party.’
Along with this, all foreign students studying in the university were asked to take transfer to other institutions. Otherwise they could have to leave the country. However, the court of Massachusetts later laid a temporary stay on the Trump government’s decision.
