Satellite photographs of the area were taken before the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April. The US space tech company Maxar Technologies received a large amount of orders to give high-resolution satellite photos of Pahalgam and its surrounding areas.

According to a report by The print, between 2 to 22 February 2025, Maxar Technologies received at least 12 orders. It was twice the normal number. The customers of this company also included Pakistan’s Business Systems International Private Limited (BSI).

The name of this company is related to federal crimes in the US. Now Maxar Technologies has ended its partnership with BSI. However, according to the report, it is not clear from the data whether BSI had given orders of Pahalgam’s satellite photographs.

Orders for Pahalgam’s satellite photographs started coming from June 2024. In addition to Pahalgam in the access of the Maxar portal, there are satellite images of sensitive areas like Pulwama, Anantnag, Poonch, Rajouri and Baramulla of Jammu-Kashmiri.

The price of each satellite picture starts at Rs 3 lakh and according to the resolution, their price increases.

An order was received ten days before the Pahalgam attack

Till now it is not clear whether these pictures were used in the planning of attacks in Pahalgam on 22 April, but India can ask Maxu to investigate who asked for these pictures and why.

In February 2025, the number of orders was the highest from the satellite frequency range of Pahalgam’s satellite image. Images were purchased on 12, 15, 18, 21 and 22 February. No order came in March.

After this, on April 12, an order was received exactly ten days before the attack. This was followed by two orders for the image on 24 and 29 April. Since then no new order has been given.

Maxar Technologies is connected to many government agencies of India

Maxar Technologies is known for its better satellite image. It gives high-definition images with pixel resolution ranging from 30cm to 15cm.

Several government agencies including the Ministry of Defense in India and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) are associated with Maxu. At least 11 Indian Space Tech Startups and companies are the customers and partners of Maxar Technologies.

The army usually uses these high-resolution images to monitor suspicious activities. Apart from this, it is also used to monitor, infiltrate and smuggling of arms deployment and infrastructure development.
