The US had captured 104 Indians in fetters and deployed to India. There was a lot of uproar over this.
Date- 5 February
Place- Amritsar’s military airbase
A C-17 Globemaster aircraft of the US Air Force landed on the airbase with 104 illegal Indian immigrants. All of them had handcuffs in their hands and chains in the feet.
There was an uproar in Parliament on this behavior with Indians. The opposition alleged that Indians were brought as terrorists. The government advised the government to learn from Colombia.
In fact, the US had sent column civilians on 26 January by handcuffs, but the Colombian President Gustavo Petro did not allow the American aircraft to enter the country.
He said that Colombian citizens living in America are not criminals. They should be treated with dignity. Colombia then brought him back from his plane.
Now the question is that when a small country like Colombia can show strictness in front of America, then why could India not do this. We talked to 2 experts to understand the reason.
4 possible reasons for India’s soft attitude …

The C-17 plane of US Military had landed at Amritsar Airport in Punjab on 5 February with 104 Indians deployed from the US.
1. India did not want controversy before Modi’s visit to America
Rajan Kumar, a foreign affairs expert and professor of JNU, says- India remained silent on this attitude of Trump, as PM Modi was to meet him only after 10 days. India did not want to create a new controversy by making a statement. This was in danger of cancellation of Trump-Modi meeting.
On this matter, Professor A.K. Pasha says-

PM Modi is refraining from speaking against Trump administration, as he wants to strengthen friendship with Trump. India does not want to spoil relations with America, the most powerful country in the world.
According to Indian World Council Senior Research Fellow Fazhur Rahman Siddiqui, India does not want to spoil the relationship in the early stages of Trump administration. The reason for India not taking action like Colombia is also geographical and political situation.
Colombia is a small country, its economic and defense needs from America are completely different from India. India’s large population lives in America. India does not show much aggressive attitude in its foreign policy than others.
2. India does not want tariff war with America
Trump or ordered 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, 10 days after becoming President. Trump alleged that the governments of these countries do not take strictness on illegal immigrants. Actually, illegal immigrants enter the US from the border of these two countries.
Trump also imposed 25% tariff on Columbia on the issue of illegal immigrants. Pro. According to Rajan Kumar, the Modi government does not want the Trump administration to put tariffs on India on this issue.
Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on China on 4 February. In response, China has also imposed 15% tariffs on the US. India is watching this tariff war between the US-China as an opportunity. The demand for Indian goods may increase there when China’s goods are expensive in America.
In 2023, China sent US $ 427 billion goods to the US. At the same time, India exported $ 83.77 billion to the US. China has exported more than 5 times to the US compared to India. In such a situation, India can increase its exports to the US.

3. America the only big partner, which does not cause business losses
Among the top 10 countries importing goods from India, the US is the only country that does not have India’s trade deficit. In 2023-24, there was a trade of over $ 118 billion between the two countries. In this, India’s trade was $ 37 billion in surplus. Whereas India had to face trade deficit with the remaining 9 countries.
Colombia’s trade with America is less than half of India. The two countries traded $ 33.8 billion in 2023. In which America’s trade deficit was $ 1.6 billion.
According to Professor Rajan Kumar, trade is an important issue in the relations between America and India. Along with economic, our relations are also very important culturally and politically. Our trade with America has been beneficial for India for a long time.

4. China needs strong partner to counter
According to Professor Rajan Kumar, Trump has been unpridged since the beginning. There is already tension in the relationship between India and China, so India does not want tension in relations with America. India needs strong partners in the present situation.
India is already facing China’s challenge on the North and North-Eastern border. Along with this, he is also getting a challenge from China in the Indo-Pacific sector.
Russia, India’s traditional ally, is entangled in the war with Ukraine. This has affected the supply of weapons to India.
India needs strong partners between the changing world order and new geo political challenges. In such a situation, India is now looking for new avenues for weapons.
Only last month, Trump asked India to buy more American weapons. India is already in the process of purchasing 31 $ 4 billion drones from the US. Apart from this, India has issued a global tender to buy 114 fighter jets. This may be discussed in Modi Trump’s meeting.
India will buy a 100 striker plane equipped with anti-tank guided missile system and will later co-produce them through a government company.
