Unified pension scheme: The Finance Ministry has extended the last date for choosing options between Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and National Pension System (NPS) to 30 September 2025. Earlier this deadline was fixed on 30 June 2025. This decision has been taken after the stakeholders demanding the deadline to extend the deadline.
The press release issued by the government said, “The last date for choosing the UPS option has been extended to 30 September 2025 in view of the requests received from the stakeholders. The deadline will be applied to the methods of current employees, former retired employees and late retired personnel methodically married wives.”
Who got the benefit?
With this decision, central government employees will get additional three months for choosing UPS or to stay in NPS itself. With this, they will be able to choose their pension option thoughtfully.
UPS is an alternative pension scheme, which has been implemented from 1 April 2025 and guarantees a lump sum amount on fixed pension payment and retirement. Recently, gratuity benefits have also been provided to employees selecting UPS options, which were earlier available only to OPS beneficiaries.
Who is eligible for UPS?
He is eligible for the NPS to switch to UPS, who is in service on 1 April 2025 or has retired by 31 March 2025. Provided that he has completed at least 10 years of service and retired under Fundamental Rules 56 (J), when this retirement is not considered a penalty under CCS (CCA) rules.
In addition, the eligible UPS characters are also eligible for this option duly married.
How to choose UPS? Know online process
The government has introduced online facility for changes in Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), so that eligible employees can switch to themselves. For this, you have to go to the E-NPS portal and follow the steps given below:
- Open the E-NPS portal and go to the Unified Pension Scheme section.
- Enter your Pran number and date of birth, then fill the captcha.
- Verification from OTP sent on mobile or email.
- Fill the online declaration form considering UPS as the final option.
- E-sign the form with the help of Aadhaar or Vid.
- Download Acknowledgment after the process is completed.
If you want to adopt offline process, then download Form A2 and submit it to your department’s nodal office.
