UPI Charges News: Will be charged on UPI transaction more than Rs 3,000? The government said this – UPI Charges on Rupees 3000 and More Transaction Government Reaction UPI MDR Finance MINISTRY

UPI Charges News: Will UPI transactions be charged for Rs 3,000 or more? Now the government has responded to this. Recently, there are reports on social media that in the coming time, the government may have to pay charge on the transaction of the big amount from UPI. It was being said that the government is planning to impose MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) on the transactions of large amount, which can make it expensive to pay from UPI. Now the answer has come from the government.

The finance ministry said this

Now the Finance Ministry has completely clarified this. The ministry has said that such reports are false, baseless and misleading. The government clearly says that it wants to promote digital payment through UPI and there is no plan to put any kind of charge on UPI. The ministry has appealed to the people not to pay attention to such rumors. The government has made it clear that it is committed to keeping UPI free and convenient. Therefore, do not trust these rumors running on social media.

What is MDR?

MDR is the fees that banks charge from merchants when they take digital payments from customers. Earlier, the merchant had to pay up to 1% MDR on payment with debit card, but in the year 2020, the government abolished MDR on debit cards to promote digital payment. However, credit card transactions still seem to be MDR, which usually occurs between 1% to 3%. This charge depends on the size, card type and merchant category of the transaction.

Record breaking UPI transaction in May

UPI has become the most used digital payment platform in India. It manages it the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).

In May 2025, a record 18.68 billion transactions were done through UPI, whose total value was Rs 25.14 lakh crore. The figure was Rs 23.95 lakh crore in April. The UPI transaction has registered an increase of 33% as compared to May last year.
