Bangladesh, South Africa and Australia registered wins on the rain-affected opening day of the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup on Saturday. South Africa made a great start to their campaign by defeating New Zealand in a crucial match while Bangladesh defeated Nepal by five wickets in a low-scoring match. Caoimhe Bray took three wickets for just one run as Australia easily defeated Scotland. Three matches were canceled due to bad weather in Malaysia. Had another seven-ball game been played between England and Ireland, the result of the match would have been decided. The matches between Nigeria and Samoa and America and Pakistan, who were debuting in the tournament, could not start due to bad weather. Bangladesh achieved the target for the loss of five wickets in 13.2 overs after bowling out Nepal for 52 runs in 18.2 overs in the Group D match.
South Africa won
For Nepal, Sana Parveen scored the highest 19 runs in 32 balls while Seeman KC (10) was only the second batsman of the team to score double digit runs. Five batsmen of Nepal were run out. While chasing the target, Bangladesh also lost three wickets for 11 runs but Sadia Islam (16) and captain Sumaiya Akhtar (12) stopped the fall of wickets and took the team closer to the target. South Africa registered a 22-run win over New Zealand in the rain-affected Group C 11-over match.
Useful contributions from openers Jemimah Botha (32 runs in 24 balls) and Simon Lawrence (21 runs in 14 balls) along with Karabo Maso (25 runs in 14 balls) helped New Zealand win by five wickets after scoring 91 runs for seven wickets. But stopped at 69 runs. Australia easily achieved the target at the loss of one wicket in 6.4 overs after bowling out Scotland for 48 runs in the Group D match, courtesy the brilliant bowling of 15-year-old Bray. Bray took three wickets while conceding one run in 3.1 overs. Emma Walsingham scored the highest 12 runs for Scotland.
Ireland faces disappointment
England scored a big score of 144 runs for seven wickets against Ireland in the Group B match. The match was abandoned due to rain interruption in the fourth over of Ireland’s innings. Before the rain interruption, Ireland had scored 28 runs for two wickets in 3.5 overs. For a result in a T20 match, five overs of play in the second innings are necessary, hence the result of this match could not be determined due to only seven balls.
