US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 50% tariffs on European Union countries. Posting on social media, he said that all the products coming from the European Union will be charged 50% tariffs, until these products are made in the US.
Trump is planning to implement it on 1 June. According to the PTI report, Trump is angry at not moving ahead of the trade deal with the European Union. EU has proposed to 0% of all tariffs by mutual consent, while Trump is adamant on imposing 10% tariffs on all types of imports.
Trump made it clear in a conversation with reporters at the Oval Office that he did not want any compromise with EU. If companies invest in America, they can avoid tariffs.

25% tariff on smartphones coming from other countries
Before the tariff announced on Europe, Trump warned of imposing 25% tariffs on the iPhone made in India and other countries.
Trump said that

I had already told Apple’s Tim Cook that iPhones sold in America should be made in the US itself. Not India or anywhere else. If this does not happen, Apple will have to pay at least 25% tariff to the US.
Later, Trump made it clear that all smartphones made abroad would have a tariff and it could apply by the end of June.
Trump does not want Apple’s product to be made in India
Donald Trump does not want Apple’s product to be built in India. Last week, Trump told the company’s CEO Tim Cook that there is no need to install factories in India. India can take care of itself.
Trump gave information about this conversation with Apple CEO on Thursday (15 May) in the program with business leaders in Doha, the capital of Qatar. He had said that Apple will now have to increase production in America.
Despite this, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer Foxconn has invested $ 1.49 billion (about ₹ 12,700 crore) in India. Foxconn has invested this in Tamil Nadu’s Yuzhan Technology (India) Private Limited in the last 5 days through its Singapore unit.
6 crore+ iPhones will be made annually in the country by 2026
- According to the Financial Times report, Apple has been working on shifting its supply chain out of there for a long time to reduce its dependence on China.
- If Apple shifts its assembling to India by the end of this year, then from 2026, more than 6 crore iPhone will be produced here annually. This is double the current capacity.
- China is still dominated by the manufacturing of the iPhone. According to the IDC, it was about 28% in the company’s global iPhone shipment in 2024.
