What is America’s two party system?
Democratic and Republican have dominated two parties for the last one hundred and fifty years in America politics. From the presidential election to the state assemblies in the country, both these parties are dominated. This two-party system is also considered to be the cause of the stability of American democracy.
The Democratic Party began in 1828 in the era of Andrew Jackson. It was initially considered to be the party of farmers and general public.
In the 20th century, it became an advocate of economic reforms like social welfare, new deal and civil rights.
At the same time, the Republican Party became against slavery in 1854 and Abraham Lincoln became its first President. In the 20th century it became a party supporting trade and tax cuts.
Why could the third party not succeed?
Third parties were formed many times in America, but could not succeed. In 1912, President Theodore Roosevelt formed the Bull Mousse Party and secured 88 electoral votes.
However, the party could not stand until the next election. In 1992, Ross Parot took 19% popular votes, yet not a single electoral vote was received.
These parties do not get a place in funding, organization and media. Voters also consider him to be voter. This is the reason why parties like Liberterian or Green Party have not been able to get more than 3-4% votes in the presidential election yet.
The major reason for the third party not being successful in America is its electoral system. The electoral structure here supports the two party system.
