Colombia has decided to bring illegal migrants extracted from the US to the country. Columbia will send a plane to the Central American country of Honduras to bring back its citizens. Earlier, Colombia did not allow two American military aircraft to land in the country with illegal migrants.
After this, US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced a 25% tariff and ban against Colombia. Also threatened to impose 50% tariff from next week.
In response to Trump’s action, Columbia President Gustavo Petro accused on social media of not having respectful behavior with migrants. Also announced a 25% increase in tariffs on American goods.
This created a situation like tariff war between the two countries. However, Colombia later withdrawn from her decision.
President Petro decided to send the President aircraft to bring them back, citing the honorable return of the exiled Colombian citizens.
475 flights from 2020 reach Colombia
475 flights arrived from 2020 to 2024 with illegal migrants from the US. Columbia is fifth in taking the flight returning with illegal migrants. Ahead of Colombia was Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Al Salvador.
Since 2024, 124 flights have reached Columbia with illegal migrants. In the last few years, a large number of Colombian citizens have reached the US-Mexico border. In the last one year, 1.27 lakh citizens of Colombia were arrested by the US on charges of illegally entering.
This number was the highest after Mexico, Guatemala and Venezuela.
