Saif Ali Khan Attack Case: The issue of knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan in his house has become a topic of discussion across the country. On the night of 15 January, a thief had entered Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s house in Bandra. To save the children, Saif confronted the intruder who attacked him with a knife. After the incident, Mumbai Police has arrested the accused who attacked Saif Ali Khan.
According to the police, he has also confessed to his crime. The name of the 30 year old accused is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, who is said to be a resident of Bangladesh.
Attacker’s Bangladeshi connection
After the arrest of the accused, the police had told that he was living in Mumbai for the last 5-6 months and worked in a housekeeping agency. After the attacker was caught, a debate once again broke out on whether people working in homes or building construction workers should be verified. At the same time, experts in the development and construction industry say that it is an almost impossible task to completely check the identity and criminal records of the workers.
Let us tell you that Mumbai is the financial capital of India and people come here from every corner of the country to work. The accused who was arrested in the Saif Ali Khan case was near a labor camp at a construction site. Whereas the police say that he is a Bangladeshi citizen and had entered India about six months ago. The accused’s lawyer has denied that he is a Bangladeshi citizen.
Laborers come from every state of the country
According to a report by Moneycontrol, after this incident, the Maharashtra government has directed real estate developers and construction agencies to ensure identity and background checks of the workers. However, real estate experts believe that it is almost impossible to accurately verify the identity of all the workers. Many labor contractors are from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and some North-Eastern states and workers are recruited largely from villages and small towns. Often, they are also given a place to live by developers or contractors in temporary labor camps at or near project sites.”
Difficult to do complete verification
Given the scale of construction in India, a big developer said that complete verification of identity, nationality and criminal background of workers is a big challenge. “We give our EPC contractor a checklist for recruitment of laborers and we ensure that their identity is verified. This is usually done through police verification, as well as based on interactions with the laborers in their villages. Because most of the workers in construction projects belong to the same village or city.”
He said, “We have heard of some cases from our EPC and labor contractors where some Aadhaar or PAN IDs were prima facie fake. But we cannot verify each and every one of the thousands of laborers on our projects.” We ensure that no anti-social people reach our project site, but in some cases when untrained laborers reach the site on the basis of fake documents, we cannot control it completely. For trained and semi-trained laborers we check their certificates or obtain information from contractors or previous employers.
