Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has expressed displeasure over the announcement of free facilities for political parties before the election. The court said that people do not want to work because of them because they are getting ration and money for free. Justice Gawai said that instead of giving free ration and money, it would be better to make such people a part of the mainstream of society so that they can contribute to the development of the country.
Why did the Supreme Court comment?
The bench of Justice BR Gawai and Justice Augustin George made this comment during the hearing of the case related to the shelter of homeless people in urban areas. During the hearing, Attorney General R Venkatramani said that the government is engaged in finalizing the urban poverty alleviation program which will be helpful in other necessary issues from providing housing to poor urban homeless people. The Supreme Court asked the Attorney General to take instructions from the government and tell when this program will be applicable. The court will hear further after 6 weeks.
Supreme Court has reprimanded earlier
Explain that this is not the first time that the Supreme Court has surrounded the Center on free schemes. Last year, the court had asked the Center and Election Commission that political parties always announce free schemes before the elections. Political parties depend on free schemes to get more votes and an example of this has also been seen in the recent Delhi elections.
