Vikram Sarabhai
New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of India’s great scientist Vikram Sarabhai. He died in his sleep on 30 December 1971. Vikram was born on 12 August 1919. He is called the father of the Indian space program. For his discoveries and work in the field of science, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) in 1972.
Vikram was born in a prestigious business family of Ahmedabad, where there was no dearth of money. He did his early studies in India, later he went to study at St. John’s College, Cambridge University. He also earned a doctorate degree.
Scientists who gave ISRO to India
When Vikram returned to India from America, he established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad in November 1947. Initially PRL worked on research. Later, due to the efforts of Vikram Sarabhai, the foundation of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was laid.
ISRO, formerly known as the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), was established by the Government of India in 1962 due to the vision of Vikram Sarabhai. ISRO was formed on August 15, 1969. He served as the first Chairman of ISRO and played a key role in developing India’s space programme. Sarabhai also established the Space Applications Center in Ahmedabad. Which is considered very important for India’s space program.
Married a famous dancer but family was not involved, this was the reason
Sarabhai was married to classical dancer Mrinalini Swaminathan. But his family could not attend his marriage. In fact, at the time when Sarabhai got married, the Quit India movement was going on in full swing in the country. Because of this the agitators had uprooted the train tracks. Because of this, Sarabhai’s family members could not attend his wedding.
