Ajuba was released in the 1990s. The superhero fantasy starring the superhero Amitabh Bachchan was produced and directed by Shashi Kapoor and was co-produced by Soviet filmmaker Gendi Vasiliv. Apart from Big B, the film featured actors like Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Sonam, Shammi Kapoor, Dara Singh, Saeed Jaffrey and Amrish Puri. A wonder in the budget of Rs 8 crore was India’s most expensive film in the 90s. Amitabh Bachchan was expected to return with this bold action drama after consecutive flop films. The film flopped at the box office
Big B starrer was criticized for the directionless plot of the film, but was appreciated for its special visual effects and music. The film could not attract the audience during its dramatic performance despite the cast and heavy visual effects adorned with the stars. The film earned only 3.50 crores in India. On adjusting the inflation, the film had overtaken Prabhas’ Adipurush, who earned Rs 393 crore against the estimated budget of Rs 700 crore.
The film was successful in Russia
Interestingly, Ajuba was successful in the Soviet Union, which was the final cooperation between Indian and Soviet industries. Russian actress Ariadna Shengelya started her Bollywood with Amitabh Bachchan starring Amitabh Bachchan, but after her failure she never worked in any Indian film again. Although this film was very much on TV.
