UP Warriors have appointed India’s senior all -rounder Deepti Sharma as their new captain before the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL). The reason for this change was that in the first two seasons, the team’s regular captain Alyssa Heli had announced that she would take a few months break to get her toed injury after the Women’s T20 World Cup and women Ashes. Due to this, Warriors had to decide to change the captain.

Assigned captaincy

Deepti Sharma was eager for this new captaincy opportunity, and was rumored to seek a change in the team to lead the leadership role. However, Deepti Sharma was entrusted with the captaincy of Warriors due to Heilie’s injury. In the last two seasons, Deepti Sharma was officially Heli’s deputy and was expected to be a stand-in captain.

Warriors have got a little more freedom to choose their foreign players due to Sharma’s captaincy. The team has a fixed place of Charmari Athapathu, Sophie Eclestone and Tahlia McGrath, while Chennel Henry (who has been included in the team instead of Heli), Alana King and Grace Harris are also present as an alternative.

The first match will play on this day

UP Warriors finished third in the inaugural season in 2023, but failed to make it to the top three in the last season. This time, Warriors will launch their campaign against Gujarat giants on 16 February. This will be the first time UP Warriors will play at their home ground in Lucknow. Warriors have four matches at BRSABV Ekana Stadium, out of which three matches will be played on 3, 6 and 8 March.
