How electric arc furnace works
Tata Steel UK sought permission to build electric arch furnace, two new leakal metalji furnace for secondary steelmaking and supporting infrastructure for secondary steelmaking. Electric arch furnace mainly uses electricity to melt scrap steel. This does not require imported iron ore and coal.
The site’s old iron and steel -making assets were closed last year. In December 2024, the company entered into an agreement with JCB to supply Green Steel. In January 2025, the company appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as the main work contractor of the project. In October last year, Tata Steel appointed the world’s legendary technology manufacturer Tenova to supply the new furnace.
