Tahwwur Rana is a businessman of Pakistani origin

64 years Tawwur Hussain Rana is a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin. He is accused of helping Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley. Headley is one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

Tehwwur Hussain worked as a doctor in the Pakistani Army. He then moved to Canada in 1997 and started working as a businessman who gave immigration services there.

From here he reached America and opened a consultancy firm called First World Immigration Services on several locations including Chicago. According to US court documents, Rana also visited Canada, Pakistan, Germany and England several times. He can speak about 7 languages.

Tahwwur is a childhood friend of David Headley, the mastermind of the attack

During the court hearing last year, government lawyers argued that Tahavwur was the childhood friend of David Headley, the mastermind of the attack and knew that Headley was working closely with Lashkar-e-Taiba. By helping Headley and providing financial help to him, Tawwur was also supporting the terrorist organization and the terrorists with him.

Rana was aware of whom Headley is getting, what is talking. He also knew the names of the attack and some targets. The US government has said that Rana was part of this entire conspiracy and there is a possibility that it has committed a crime of funding the terrorist attack.

David Headley was the mastermind of the Mumbai attack. Tehwavur Rana was his childhood friend, who helped him to carry out the attack.

David Headley was the mastermind of the Mumbai attack. Tehwavur Rana was his childhood friend, who helped him to carry out the attack.

Tehwavur helped Headley to open an office in Mumbai

It was Rana who helped Headley open an office in Mumbai. He opened this office to hide his terrorist activities. Headley began to roam India through Immigration Consultancy and find the location where the Lashkar-e-Taiba could carry out a terrorist attack. He did the Reiki of Taj Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. Later there were attacks here.

The US government says, ‘Headley has stated in his statement that Rana ordered a person associated with the First World to make documents for Headley to make the fake story related to opening the First World Office in Mumbai. It was Rana who advised Headley how to get a visa to visit India. All these things have been certified by email and other documents.

Rana was arrested in October 2009

In October 2009 in Chicago, USA, FBI arrested Tawwur Rana from O’Hare Airport. He was accused of providing necessary goods to carry out the terrorist attack in Mumbai and Copenhagen. On the basis of Headley’s testimony, Tawwur was sentenced to 14 years in jail. After this, he was to stay under surveillance for five years.

In 2011, Rana was found guilty of plotting an attack on Danish Newspaper Morgeinn Galends-Posten. The newspaper raided 12 controversial cartoons on Prophet Mohammed in 2005. In protest against this, a cartoonist’s head was beheaded in the office attack. The next year, the same 12 cartoons were raided by the French magazine named ‘Charlie Hebdo’, in return for which 12 people were killed by attacking Charlie Hebdo’s office in 2015.

India’s NIA filed a charge sheet against Rana in 2011

In 2011 itself, India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet on 9 people including Rana for plotting and carrying out the Mumbai terror attack. In a 400 -page charge sheet presented by the Mumbai Police in 2023, the police wrote that Rana entered India on 11 November 2008 and stayed here till 21 November. During this, he stayed at Hotel Rinasan in Powai, Mumbai for two days.

Indian government has been trying for 6 years to bring Rana to India

India first filed a request to extradite Rana to India through diplomatic channels on 4 December 2019. A complaint was filed on 10 June 2020 demanding his temporary arrest.

Rana filed a petition in the Lower Court to the US Court of appeals in San Francisco against the demand for extradition from India. His petition was dismissed from everywhere.

He finally demanded a review of the Lower Court’s decision to file a petition in the US Supreme Court on 13 November 2024. On January 21 this year, the Supreme Court also dismissed Rana’s petition.
