Mohammad Kanju al-Hassan, the top military judge who sentenced thousands of people to death in the infamous Sednaya prison during Bashar al-Assad’s presidency in Syria, has been arrested. Kanju Hassan’s arrest is the highest level arrest since the recent uprising in Syria. Kanju al-Hassan was a judge of the Syrian Military Court from 2011 to 2014. During this period he had given death sentence to thousands of people.
Kanju Hasan is accused of having collected Rs 1500 crore from the relatives of the prisoners through different means. According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Kanju Hassan was arrested along with 20 other people on Thursday.
Syria’s interim Interior Minister Mohammed Abdel Rahman said 14 government soldiers were killed while arresting Kanju al-Hassan, who was hiding in Tatuns province. Kanju Al-Hassan was banned by the British government in 2023 due to the repression of civilians in Syria. Kanju was responsible for inhumane crimes in Sednaya prison.

After studying law, he served in the military court of the Syrian Army. In 2011, when the Arab Spring broke out in Syria against Assad, Hassan was a judge in the Regional Army Court of Damascus.
According to one witness, Hasan worked with intelligence agencies to obtain false testimony from other people against political prisoners. The hearing in the court lasts only for 30 minutes, in which the accused is not allowed to speak.
