DOT means the Department of Telecommunications has tightened the rules for service providers before the launch of satellite internet service in India. Amid tensions between India and Pakistan, the Department of Telecommunications has added additional conditions for security provides Airtel Onweeb, Jio, Amazon Kuiper and Starlink. The Department of Telecommunications will have to meet these security parameters for permission for satellite service license in India. The biggest impact of this strictness of DOT may have on Starlink, which has not yet completed the old security standard.

What is the new framework?

The Department of Telecommunications has advised satellite operators to meet new parameters such as website blocking, metadata collection and legal surveillance under the new framework. These new criteria released by DOT will influence Amazon Kuiper and Starlinks, who have applied for license including current license holders Bharti Airtel Onweb and Jio SES. Come, let’s know about these new conditions …

  1. Under the new regulation, satellite service providers will have to verify user terminals. For this, they can use authentication methods, in which any unreserved foreign device will get service access only in India only after the registration process.
  2. Apart from this, service providers will have to track user terminal (fixed and mobile) real-time location data in India’s border on demand of security agency. In this, information about the lalong and latitud of the user terminal will have to be given on the basis of real-time.
  3. Also, the Department of Telecommunications said in its new terms that service providers will have to provide undertaking that they will not send the data of Indian users to any other country.
  4. Not only this, under the new rule, service providers will terminate a user’s network in a situation when they are roaming in an unauthorized area or restricted area.
  5. Under the new rule, the Department of Telecommunications has provided a provision for service providers to create a special surveillance zone within a 50 km radius of the international border of India.

A total of 29 to 30 such new security parameters have been added to companies receiving satellite service licenses. The Department of Telecommunications has added these new terms to the license conditions after intensive deliberations with all stakeholders. These rules of the Department of Telecommunications have been added keeping in mind national security. These new provisions have been added by DOT after the input from security agencies about neighboring countries, especially in Pakistan and China.

Starlink will get a shock

India can prove to be a big market for Starlink. The company has started its satellite broadband service in some neighboring countries of India, while Alan Musk’s company has got a license from some countries. This additional security criteria in India can further delay Starlink’s service launching.
