SEBI New Chief: Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is soon going to get a new chairperson. Government of India has invited applications for the post of Chairperson of SEBI. The last date for submission of applications is February 17, 2025. Currently, the chairperson of SEBI is Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ends on 28 February 2025.

Madhabi Puri Buch took over as SEBI Chief on March 2, 2022 for a tenure of three years. She is the first woman to become the chief of SEBI. He replaces Ajay Tyagi, who served as SEBI chairman for five years from March 2017 to February 2022. Before Ajay Tyagi, UK Sinha was the chairperson of SEBI for 6 consecutive years. He got 2 terms.

Many regulatory reforms were carried out during Madhabi Buch’s tenure, but they also faced challenges. Parliamentary committee raised questions on his leadership regarding NSE co-location scam. Additionally, the allegations against Hindenburg Research also heightened the investigation. However despite these issues, the government decided that she would complete her term.

Madhabi Puri Buch joined SEBI as a full-time member in April 2017. After being a full-time member for about 5 years, he was made the Chief of SEBI in 2022. Before joining SEBI, Butch had worked in several important positions in ICICI Bank from 1997 to 2009. From 2009 to 2011, she was the CEO of ICICI Securities.

The Chairperson of SEBI is generally appointed for a term of three years. However, the government also extends the tenure of the chairperson on many occasions. Candidates having expertise in Finance, Stock Market and Regulation are expected to be considered during the selection process.
