Saudi Arabia has amended the work visa rules from January 14 and now the new rules have come into effect. According to this, Indian employees applying for work visa in Saudi Arabia will have to complete pre-verification of their professional and educational qualifications. Indians are the second largest expatriate community in Saudi Arabia after Bangladesh, numbering over 24 lakh.
Domestic workers can now renew their Iqama
According to the news, in line with the 2030 vision, reforms have been initiated in the labor sector to make employment contracts more flexible for migrants. Stricter certification requirements for some jobs are also part of the changes. Meanwhile, the country has also announced improvements in rules for expatriates renewing their Iqama or residence permits, and expanded exit and re-entry visas. In a post on X, Saudi Arabia’s Directorate General of Passports announced that dependents of expatriates as well as domestic workers based outside the kingdom can now renew their Iqama.
More than 24 lakh Indian workers
By 2024, Saudi Arabia is expected to host more than 24 lakh Indian workers, including 16.4 lakh in the private sector and 7,85,000 domestic workers. Bangladesh leads the way with 26.9 lakh migrant workers. Indian workers, including women, remain an important part of Saudi Arabia’s labor market and send remittances to India. Establishment owners and HR departments will be encouraged to verify the certificates and information provided by migrant workers. The initiative is expected to streamline recruitment and enhance the quality of the workforce in the Kingdom.
