India’s men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Super 1000 badminton tournament but HS Prannoy bowed out after losing in the second round. The pair of Satwik and Chirag defeated Malaysia’s N Azrin and Tan WK 21-15 21-15 in the round of 16 match that lasted 43 minutes. Now in the quarterfinals, the seventh seeded Indian pair will face the local favorite pair of Yiu Sin Ong and Ai Yi Teo.
On the other hand, Prannoy bowed out in the second round of men’s singles after losing to China’s Li Shi Feng. The 32-year-old Indian player lost to seventh seed Li 8-21, 21-15, 21-23 in a match that lasted one hour and 22 minutes. Malvika Bansod lost to third seed and world number five Han Yue of China 18-21 11-21 in the women’s round of 16. Earlier, the women’s doubles pair of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand had to face defeat by China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Jian 21-15, 19-21, 19-21 in the round of 16 match.
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost
In mixed doubles, the pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost to the seventh seeded Chinese pair of Cheng Jing and Zhang Chi 13-21, 20-22 in 44 minutes. Another mixed doubles pair of Satish Karunakaran and Adya Variyath lost 10-21 17-21 to Malaysia’s Soon Huar Goh and Shevon Jamie Lai.
Earlier, HS Prannoy and rising shuttler Malvika Bansod entered the pre-quarterfinals by winning the preliminary matches of men’s and women’s singles respectively at the Malaysia Open on January 8. At the same time, for India, the pair of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila and Satish Kumar Kurunakaran and Adya Variyath also made it to the mixed doubles pre-quarterfinals of the Super 1000 tournament. In a match which was delayed due to water dripping from the roof, Prannoy defeated Canadian rival Brian Yang 21-12, 17-21, 21-15 in one hour and 29 hours.
