Pension Scheme for Imprisoned During Emergency: People who were jailed during emergency in the country will get a monthly pension of Rs 20,000. That is, the government will give pension to the people who were jailed from 1975 to 1977. For that, people will just have to provide some important documents, after which they will start getting a pension of Rs 20,000 every month. The Odisha government has announced a monthly pension of ₹20,000 to those who were jailed during the Emergency between 1975 and 1977. This pension will be given to those persons who are alive till January 1, 2025. Along with this, the government will also compensate their medical expenses.
Declaration and identification of beneficiaries
This decision has been taken by the State Home Department of Odisha Government in a notification issued on January 13, 2025. This pension is for those persons who were arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency. The government has constituted committees at the state and district levels to identify eligible persons. Hundreds of people were arrested across the country during the Emergency. This step of the Odisha government has been taken to provide such prisoners their rights.
Eligibility and Application Process
Eligible persons can apply for pension to the Collector and District Magistrate. The application will have to include documents related to his arrest during the Emergency, names of three co-prisoners and an affidavit confirming that he was jailed under MISA.
Chief Minister’s statement
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi said that these pensions and facilities have been announced keeping in mind the demands of the people jailed during the Emergency. He also confirmed that these benefits will also include health insurance and railway facilities. This step has been taken to honor the struggle and contribution of the persons jailed during the Emergency.
