Russia has been trying to capture the city since 2024, but has not been successful.
Ukraine’s Army Chief Olexander Sirski said on Friday that Russia has deployed 1 lakh soldiers to occupy the city of Pokrovsk in East Ukraine’s Donnetsk province. Sirski said that the city of Pokrovsk has become the most stressful front between Russia and Ukraine War.
Russia has been trying to capture Pokrovsk since last year. However, the Ukrainian Army, however, thwarted the Russian operation in the area last year.
Sirski said that last year Ukraine attacked the Kursk area and entangled about 63,000 soldiers from Russia there. This reduced Russia’s pressure on Pokrovsk and Ukraine got a chance to make a strategy afresh.

The city of Pokrovsk has road and railway supply line, due to which its strategic significance is very high. Apart from this, it is also associated with the Military Centers present in the cities of Kostyantinivka, Kramatorsk and Sloveansk in Ukraine.
Sirski alleged that Russia wants to show off his military strength in front of the world by controlling Pokrovsk. Sirski said- Russian soldiers want to claim fake victory by reaching Pokrovsk and hoisting their flag there.
60 thousand people lived here before the Russian attack
Pokrovsk had 60,000 people, but most people have left the city since the war started with Russia in 2022. The city had Ukraine’s last cooking coal mine, which closed early this year.
President Putin’s target is to fully capture Donnetsk and Luhansk, and Pokrovsk is an important part of this strategy.
Ukraine and his allies allege that Putin is deliberately causing hurdle in peace efforts to capture more and more terrain from Ukraine. However, Ukraine’s strong defense line in Pokrovsk is making it difficult for Russia.

According to the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Ukrainian Army thwarted the Russia attacks through a drone attack. Russia is now trying to surround it from the south and north-east instead of directly attacking the city.
