New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke openly on the Godhra riots that took place in Gujarat in February 2002. PM Modi said that it had not even been three days since I became MLA that riots took place in Godhra. As soon as I got the news of the riots, I decided to go to Godhra. I saw the reality of Godhra with my own eyes. The pictures of Godhra were very painful. I was told that the train was on fire.
went to the hospital to meet the injured
PM Modi said that bomb blasts took place at five places in Godhra. You can imagine what that situation would have been like. I told my security people that I want to go to the police control room. On this the security people refused to go there citing security reasons. I said whatever happens I will go there. I came and sat in the car. I said I will go to the hospital first. Security people said that blasts are happening everywhere. Despite this, fulfilling my responsibility, I reached the hospital to see the injured.
Narendra Modi was in the assembly at the time of the riots
PM Modi said that I had a sense of responsibility. I became MLA for the first time on 24 February 2002. Went to the assembly for the first time on 27 February. Not even three days had passed since he became an MLA when suddenly the Godhra incident happened. At that time I was in the assembly. As soon as we left, we said that I want to go to Godhra. I said that first we will go to Varodara and take a helicopter from there. I was told there was no helicopter. I said let’s see if we find someone. A single engine helicopter was found. I was told that the VIP cannot be taken by the helicopter. I argued with them that I am not a VIP. I am a normal man. I give it in writing that if anything happens, it will be my responsibility. After this we reached Godhra.
The pictures were very painful
I was very worried. When I went to Godhra, I saw that the pictures there were very painful. I am also human. Everything happened to me which happens inside a human being. I did whatever I could at that time.
