The Supreme Court on Monday directed the wife of Bengaluru-based AI engineer Atul Subhash, who died by suicide last year, to produce her minor son in the court. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma asked the lawyer appearing for Atul’s estranged wife Nikita Singhania to produce the child through video conference.

The bench said, “This is a habeas corpus petition. We want to see the child. Present the child.” The lawyer appearing for Singhania said that he will present the child within 30 minutes. The top court will continue hearing the case. The court was told that the child has left school in Haryana and is currently living with his mother.
‘Grandmother is a stranger to the child’
The bench was hearing a plea filed by Anju Devi, mother of Atul Subhash, who has filed a habeas corpus petition seeking custody of her four-year-old grandson. On January 7, the court had refused to grant him custody of the minor child, saying he was a “stranger to the child”.
Committed suicide on December 9
The body of 34-year-old Atul Subhash was found hanging in his house in Munnekolalu, Bengaluru on December 9 last year. Atul had blamed his wife and in-laws for forcing him to commit suicide. Before committing suicide, Atul made a 90-minute video and wrote a 40-page suicide note expressing his grief. Atul Subhash and Nikita were married in 2019. Both of them also had a son in 2020. Atul Subhash was a resident of Bihar while Nikita was a resident of Jaunpur district of UP. (with language inputs)
