Nihal Modi, brother of Nirav Modi, accused in the PNB scam, has been arrested in the US. The arrest is made on the basis of extradition request of India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). His bail plea will be heard on July 17 in the National District of Honolulu (NDOH). The US Department of Justice has confirmed the arrest.
Nihal is accused of cheating more than $ 2.6 million (about 22 crore rupees) from LLD Diamonds USA, one of the world’s largest diamond companies. Investigation claimed that Nehal Modi got excuses with the costCo and got diamonds from the company by fraudulently. But this deal was never completed. After this, Nihal Modi sold those diamonds and mortgaged for personal benefit
Apart from diamond fraud, Nehal Modi is accused of joining the PNB scam of Rs 13,600 crore. ED and CBI say that Nihal along with Nirav rigged money through fake companies and erased the evidence after the scam surfaced.
How was Nihal arrested?
In 2019, Interpol issued a red corner notice against Nihal, after which his search began globally. The CBI and ED demanded their extradition from the US in 2021, as they were reported to be in the US. Recently, US officials arrested Nehal at India’s request. The arrest took place in Honolulu, and his bail plea will be heard on 17 July 2025 in the National District of Honolulu (NDOH) Court.
