Today is the second day of PM Modi’s Cyprus tour. He reached Cyprus on 15 June. Where President Nicos met Christodolidase. He then met the Indian community.
Today Modi will be given a formal welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Cyprus, after which he will discuss the delegation level. Then Modi will leave to Canada from Cyprus. Modi will stay here from 16-17 June.
PM will participate in the G7 Summit held at Kananaskis, Alberta province, Canada. India got this invitation just 10 days before the commencement of the summit.
This will be PM Modi’s first meeting with Canadian PM Mark Carney. Mark Carney became the new PM of Canada on 14 March after Justin Trudeau’s resignation in January 2025. During the time of Justin Trudeau, India-Canada relations were soured.
Will the G-7 summit be improved with India-Canada relations, what can happen in Trump and Modi and what is the reason for the late coming …
Question-1: What is G-7, which are the countries in it?
answer: G-7 means ‘Group of Seven’, a group of 7 countries in the world, which is called the world’s ‘modern economy’. These countries are America, France, Britain, Japan, Italy, Canada and Germany.
Earlier it used to be named G-8. In 2014, when Russia captured the neighboring country Crimea, the rest of the member countries dropped Russia out of the group. Its name became G-7.

Question-2: What is G-7 summit, what is the special thing about its agenda this time?
answer: Every year the G-7 summit is held for talks on a fixed agenda, which is organized by the country of G-7. Actually, all 7 countries of G-7 preside in turn. This year Canada is presiding. In such a situation, the G-7 summit will be held in the city of Kananaskis in Alberta Province, Canada. The agenda of this summit has issues like global peace and security, economic stability, development and digital development.
Apart from this, leaders and officers of G-7 member countries have several meetings in a year, which have many agreements and official statements are issued on major events in the world. Initially the G-7 agenda was to solve issues like economic challenges and climate change. Later, issues related to political and security also joined it. G-7 decisions on global issues affect the whole world.
For example, G-7 created a global fund in 2002 to fight malaria and AIDS. During the financial crisis in 1998, financially assisted countries such as Indonesia and Thailand. Russia-Ukraine decided to impose strict restrictions on Russia during the rust and help Ukraine.

Question-3: How many times did PM Modi attend the G-7 summit?
answer: Indian Prime Ministers have been commonly called for the G-7 summit. Manmohan Singh, who was PM from 2004 to 2014, took part in the G-8 summit five times.
At the same time, PM Modi was first called at the summit in Biaritz, France in 2019. After this, the US was to host in 2020, but the US then canceled the summit. Except for this one year, from 2019 to 2024, PM Modi attended the G-7 summit every year. In 2021, he joined it from virtual medium. Then joined Germany in 2022, Japan in 2023 and G-7 Summit in Italy in 2024.

Question-4: What does this time mean the delay in getting India invited?
1. Khalistan supporters of Canada demanded not to invite Modi: There are more than 7 lakh Sikhs living in Canada. After India, the most Sikhs are here. There are ministers supporting the Khalistani movement in Canadian governments. Canada has a large lobby opposing India, which does not want India-Canada to have better relations.
According to AK Pasha, Professor of International Relations in JNU, this lobby pressured the Canadian government not to call PM Modi at the summit. The Khalistani movement in Canada is still strong. India has been demanding that Canada behave strictly towards Khalistan supporters, but the Canadian government has been supporting them to pressurize India. Mark Carney’s attitude is also loose in this matter.
2- PM Modi will accept invitation, it was not confirmed: Rajan Kumar, Associate Professor of International Relations in JNU, says, ‘India also have ideological differences with the new Canadian government. In such a situation, it was not confirmed that PM Modi would accept Canada’s Invitation. If Trudeau had been in government, PM Modi would hardly go to Canada. When relations with a country are not good, there are such obstacles, even if the meeting of BRICS is in China, the issue arises whether the PM will go to China or not.
Pro. AK Pasha says,

PM Modi is welcomed a lot in all foreign visits. If there is no invitation from Canada, then it would have been a big shock for India’s foreign policy.
Question-5: What will PM Modi do in the summit?
answer: Pro. Rajan Kumar says that there will be talk on issues like economic issues, climate change in the summit. Leaders of countries will also talk round on terrorism. However, the importance of G-7 has now decreased. Trump has put tariffs on the rest of its member countries. In such a situation, there is a kind of divide inside the G-7. PM Modi will definitely be involved in G-7, but he will hold bilateral talks with a country, it is less likely.

Question-6: Can Khalistani faction protest during this time?
answer: More than 1 lakh Sikhs live in Alberta province of Canada. In the city of Kananaskis, where there is to be a summit, there are going to be major protests. U
Actually, the Canadian government calls the ‘peaceful Protest’ to be the right of the public. Earlier, despite India’s objections, Canada had allowed protests in front of the Indian Embassy.
Pro. AK Pasha says,

When PM Modi arrives, Sikh groups can protest. It is possible that this is why there was a delay in taking a decision to attend PM Modi’s involvement in the summit.
Question-7: Will Canada and India improve relations with G-7 summit?
answer: For this, first understand a little background of Canada and India’s relations-
- In 2023, the then Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused India of killing Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar living in Canada. India rejected these allegations outright. After this, relations between India and Canada were not good.
- Mark Carney became the new PM of Canada on 14 March after Trudeau’s resignation in January 2025. On 25 May, the new Foreign Minister Anita Anand and India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar spoke over the phone. This was the first official dialogue between the two countries after Mark Carney came to power.
- After this, Anita said in an interview that Canada wants to call relations with India, apart from America, to increase business.
- In an interview in May, Anita had said, “No agreement will be made with the law, investigation is going on in the case (Nijjar murder). We are also focusing on increasing partnership with India.
Pro. AK Pasha says, ‘India refused to have any kind of hand in Nijjar’s murder, but the Carney government is seeking support from India in the investigation of the matter. This issue is still hot. However, after Carney came to power, India and Canada have increased the hope of getting better relations.
Pro. Rajan Kumar says,

Trump asked Canada to be made the 51st state of America. Canada suffered damage due to increasing American tariffs on Canada. His relationship with China is not good. In such a situation, Canada will try to improve relations with India through this summit.

Question-8: What can happen during the meeting between Trump and Modi?
answer: As usual, the top leaders of Pakistan were not called for the G-7 summit this time. At the same time, this is the first time after Operation Sindoor, PM Modi will meet Trump in Canada.
Pro. AK Pasha says, ‘Trump has not been able to do anything special on Iran’s nuclear weapons, Israel-Gaja and Russia-Ukraine war. Therefore, he is repeatedly taking credit to get India-Pakistan ceasefire done, while PM Modi has not said anything on it yet, because he does not want to offend Trump. PM Modi can meet Trump and explain his side, but Trump is blunt. In such a situation, they can confront.
Pro. Rajan Kumar also says, ‘PM Modi will not do any discussion about Pakistan in front of Trump. Trump is a miss-guided missile. When and what to say, it is not trusting. ‘
Question-9: How is G-7 different from G-20?
answer, G-7 has no permanent office and its member countries cannot pass any international law. The biggest issue in G-20 is World Economy, while political issues are also important for G-7.
The G-20, built in 1999, includes countries of BRICS besides the countries of G-7. Apart from India, these countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkas and European Union.
According to Rajan Kumar, G-20 also includes new and increasing economy countries. Even though the agenda of G-7 and G-20 is the same, G-20 is currently a more effective group. In 2020, US President Trump also called G-7 a very outdated group.
