Pakistan has been appointed as Chairman of the Taliban Ban Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The Taliban Ban Committee is also known as the 1988 committee. Guyana and Russia will work as the vice -presidents of this committee.

This committee takes decisions such as freezing the economic property of individuals, groups and institutions, traveling and banning weapons, which are considered a threat to Afghanistan’s peace, stability and security.

Pakistan is trying to improve relations with Taliban

Pakistan will now preside over meetings associated with the Taliban Ban Committee, prepare recommendations and help in creating an agreement between members.

The Taliban Ban Committee previously monitored terrorists associated with ISIL and Al-Qaeda. It was later re -organized in 2011 under the proposal of UNSC in 2011 to focus on the Taliban. According to reports, if it takes strict action against the Taliban after the command of Pakistan banning the Taliban, Pakistan can affect its relationship.

Pakistan has got this responsibility at a time when it is trying to improve its relationship with Taliban. Last month itself, Taliban and Pakistan’s foreign ministers met through China.

Anti -Terrorism Committee does not have the right to punish

Apart from this, Pakistan has also been made the vice -president of the Anti -Terrorism Committee (1373 Counter Terrorism Committee). Algeria has been made the chairman of the Anti -Terrorism Committee. France and Russia have been made the vice -president of the committee along with Pakistan.

The Anti -Terrorism Committee does not have the right to punish or take action by itself, but it monitors the activities of the member countries and suggests them what steps they take against terrorism.

The chairmanship of the committee changes every year, and this role is given to a member country. In 2025, this committee has been chairmanship to Algeria, while 3 countries including Pakistan have been made vice -presidents.

India chaired this committee in 2022. The chairmanship was presided over by India after being elected a temporary member for 2021-2022.

Both the Taliban Ban Committee and the Anti-Terrorist Committee are committees of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), but their works and scope are different.

The Anti -Terrorist Committee helps in fighting terrorism all over the world. At the same time, the task of the Taliban Ban Committee is to ban the terrorists who pose a threat to the peace and security of Afghanistan.

India has been repeatedly raising the issue that Pakistan gives the highest number of nominated nations nominated terrorists and terrorist organizations. For example, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was found to be hidden in Abbottabad, Pakistan and was killed in the US Navy seal operation in 2011.

Significantly, Pakistan is a temporary member of the UN Security Council of 15 countries for the tenure of 2025-26. The Security Council has five permanent members – China, France, Russia, Britain and America. Apart from Pakistan, the current non-established members are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.
