Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled the schedule of the 5th unit of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (Chashma-5).
Pakistan is going to build its largest nuclear power plant ever to increase electricity production. For this, Pakistan’s Atomic Energy Regulatory Agency has approved it for power generation in the country. This plant has been designed by Chinese company Hualong.
Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has issued a statement saying-

PNRA has issued a license for the construction of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit Five (C-5), which will be the largest plant to generate electricity through nuclear power with a capacity of 1,200 MW.
C-5 is a third generation advanced pressurized water reactor. About 3.7 billion US dollars will be spent to build it. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council of Pakistan has already approved for this. It includes double-shell containment and reactor-filter venting system.
This plant will provide its services for 60 years. This is the third nuclear power plant of this design in Pakistan. Apart from this, two other plants, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Units 2 and 3, are already operational.
Documents related to radiation protection, nuclear safety examined
According to the report, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission had applied for the license in April this year and had also submitted a preliminary safety assessment report and design and operational aspects related to nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management. Many documents were sent.
At present the total nuclear power capacity in Pakistan is about 3500 MW which is about 27 percent of the total power production of the country. Pakistan also has a nuclear plant named Karachi-3 whose capacity is about 1000 MW.

There are currently 6 nuclear power plants in Pakistan.
Second major grid breakdown occurred in Pakistan in 2023
Earlier on January 23, 2023, entire Pakistan was plunged into darkness. This was the second major grid breakdown in the country in two years. The blackout lasted for about 12–13 hours in most areas, while people in many villages remained without electricity for 24 to 72 hours. During this time, power supply started in the capital Islamabad and its neighboring city Rawalpindi after about 8 hours. At the same time, electricity came back in Lahore and Karachi after about 16 hours.
Internet and mobile phone services were affected due to the blackout. Many companies and hospitals said they used backup generators. The textile industry had to suffer a loss of about $70 million due to the blackout. People were not even able to get drinking water at many places. Many ATMs had also stopped working.
