Country Onion production is expected to increase by 19% to 288.77 lakh tonnes in the current crop year ended on June 2025. The Ministry of Agriculture has expressed this possibility in the first advance estimate. Last year, onion production was 242.67 lakh tonnes. The crop year runs from July to June. The Ministry released the first advance production estimates of horticulture crops for the crop year 2024-25, stating that tomato production is expected to increase by 1.06% to about 215.49 lakh tonnes, which was around 213.23 lakh tonnes last year. Potato production is expected to reach 595.72 lakh tonnes, which is 25.19 lakh tonnes higher than last year’s potato production level.
Total vegetable production will increase
The total vegetable production in the year 2024-25 is estimated to increase from 2,072.08 lakh tonnes to 2,145.63 lakh tonnes in the last year. The production of fruits in the year 2024-25 is expected to increase by 2.48 lakh tonnes to 1,132.26 lakh tonnes due to an increase in production of mangoes, grapes and bananas, mainly. Production of horticulture crops is estimated at 179.37 lakh tonnes, which is more than 176.66 lakh tonnes in the year 2023-24. Spices are estimated to be 119.96 lakh tonnes.
Hope to increase the production of garlic and turmeric
There is a possibility of increasing the production of garlic and turmeric. In the year 2024-25, the total horticulture production in the country is estimated to be around 36 crore 20.9 lakh tonnes, which is about 73.42 lakh tonnes (2.07 percent) more than the final estimate of 2023-24. This year, the total sowing area of all horticulture crops was slightly reduced to 2 crore 88.4 lakh hectare, compared to 2 crore 90.9 lakh hectare last year.
