At least 100 people have been shot dead in a village in Yalevata city of North-Central Benu State, Nigeria. Hundreds of people are injured and dozens of people are still missing.
Human Rights Group Amnesty International Nigeria said in a post on Facebook that the attack took place from late Friday to Saturday morning. The injured are not getting the necessary medical facilities so far.
According to Amnesty, in this mass attack, the attackers locked many families in their homes and burnt them alive. People were so badly burnt, it became difficult to identify them.
The Benu police confirmed the attack, but did not say who killed and how many people have been killed. Local people told the news agency AFP that more than 100 people were feared dead in the attack.
Battle between Muslim-Christian people for land and water in Benu Benyu is in the middle belt of Nigeria, which has a majority Muslim population to the north and mostly Christians live in the south. There is often a fight for land and water between the two communities.
These fights become worse due to ethnic and religious partition. Especially there is a competition between Muslim and Christian shepherds and farmers regarding land.
Shepherds need land for grazing their cattle and farmers for farming. Farmers accuse the shepherds that they graze cattle in their fields and destroy the crop.
Shepherds argue that these lands are the way of pasture, which got the rights after the first law enacted in 1965 after the country’s independence.
