More than 400 workers are trapped in a closed gold mine in South Africa. According to Al Jazeera’s report, more than 100 of these workers have died. A special mining rescue team has been sent to the spot for relief and rescue operations.

According to the report, workers have lost their lives due to hunger and thirst. These workers were trapped in the mine for the last several months. On Monday, the rescue team evacuated many people from this mine near Stilfontein, 90 km from the capital Johannesburg. 9 dead bodies have also been recovered.

According to Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), a social organization associated with mine workers, the police had started action against illegal mining last year. Since then these workers were trapped in the mine.

The police had removed the ropes of the mine

The police had tried to seal this mine in November last year. For this the workers were asked to come out. However, fearing arrest, the workers refused to come out of the mine.

According to MACUA, after the workers refused, the police removed the rope and pulley used to enter and exit the mine. After this the workers were trapped in the mine.

According to the South African newspaper Sunday Times, the rescue team has prepared a cage which is being lowered 3 km down into the mine. With the help of this cage, the remaining people are being taken out first.

This operation may take about 16 days.

Gold mining is done in 4 stages,

First stage- finding the gold mine

According to the World Gold Council, even after finding gold deposits at some place, one has to face many problems in its mining. This requires time, financial resources and many experts.

The probability of further mining after initial evidence of gold reserves was found would have been less than 1%. This is why only 10% of the gold mines in the world have enough gold for mining.

Once it is decided that mining can be done to extract gold, a detailed model is prepared for it. This entire process may take from 1 to 10 years.

Second stage- Developing the gold mine

Once it is determined that gold can be mined in a mine, the mine is developed for further excavation. Mining companies apply for permits and licenses before starting the digging process. Generally this entire process can take several years.

After the paperwork is completed, mining companies develop infrastructure for the workers. This entire process may take 1 to 5 years.

Third Stage- Gold Mining

The third stage is the most important in gold mining. Usually found with gold ore. In this stage gold is separated from ore. During this period, many factors affect the price of gold in the international market, cost of mining and purity of gold.

Due to the development of technology, the process of mining has become easier. Mines are now being developed keeping technology in mind. This entire process may take 10 to 30 years.

Fourth stage- closure of the mine

After the mining process is over, it may take 1 to 5 years for the companies to close the mine. This is a very difficult process. During this time, companies close the mine, clean the area and plant trees. The mining company has to monitor the mine for a long time even after the mine is closed.
