Canadian businessman Tehwavur Rana of Pakistani origin is currently in the US jail.
Tahwwur Rana, accused of the Mumbai attack (26/11), will be brought to India soon. The US Supreme Court has approved Rana’s extradition under the Indo-US extradition treaty. Tehwavur Rana was arrested by FBI in 2009.
On 13 November 2024, Rana appealed against the extradition decision, which was rejected by the Supreme Court on 21 January.
This was the last chance to avoid extradition. Earlier he appealed to a court in San Francisco, where his petition was dismissed. The US court had said in its judgment that it could be sent to India under the extradition treaty between the two countries.
Rana’s name is also registered as an accused in the 405 -page charge sheet of the Mumbai attack. According to this, Rana is a member of ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to the charge sheet, Rana was helping David Coleman Headley, the main accused of the attack.
On 26 November 2008, 10 terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba were attacked in Mumbai. Among them 166 people were killed and 300 were injured. Some of the dead were some American citizens. In the encounter, the police killed 9 terrorists and arrested Ajmal Kasab. He was hanged in 2012.

Rana’s appeal was rejected on 15 August 2024
Rana’s appeal against extradition decision was rejected by the US court on 15 August. The US court said in its judgment on August 15 that it could be sent to India under the extradition treaty between the two countries.

The habeas corpus petition is used when a person is illegally kept in custody. However, the District Court of Los Angeles said in its judgment that on the basis of which India has demanded extradition of Tehwwur, its extradition can be allowed.
After the decision against him, Rana filed another petition in the Ninth Circuit Court. The decision came on Thursday. In which the habeas corpus was justified to dismiss the petition.
The panel admitted that Rana’s crime falls under the terms of the extradition treaty between the US and India. India has given strong evidence of the allegations against Rana regarding the attack.
