Cessed Buildings: Large relief has been announced for hundreds of families living in dilapidated buildings in Mumbai before the monsoon. The Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) under the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has launched a assistance scheme.
After a regular monsoon examination of MBRRB, 96 ‘ced’ buildings have been declared extremely dangerous. About 2,400 people are currently living in these buildings. There is a high risk of falling in the rainy season, which can cause loss of life and property. This is the reason why the board is arranging temporary hideouts for these people.
What are cited buildings?
Cessed Building is the old building on which the government has imposed a special tax ‘cess’. These buildings in Mumbai are usually built before 1940. The fare for those living in these is very low. The maintenance and repair of these buildings is responsible for MBRRB, a special department of MHADA (MHADA).
What is MBRRB’s plan?
₹ 20,000 per month help: Those who find alternative houses for themselves, MHADA will give them ₹ 20,000 month as rent.
400 temporary flat rent: MHADA will rent 400 small flats of 180 to 250 sqft size from private agencies. These flats will be given as transit homes for a maximum of three years.
There are already 786 empty transit homes, but this number is not enough for all people. Therefore, private landlords have been appealed to give flats. MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal (IAS) has directed the board to contact private landlords by advertising.
Through this decision, MHADA wants to ensure that weak and at risk people can get roofs during the monsoon. The board has appealed to the people to cooperate with the officers and shift to safe places as soon as possible.
What will be recovered from expenses?
This entire expenditure – ie rent, maintenance and other charge – will be charged from the builders or housing society working for redevelopment of the respective building. The recovery will start from the date when families start getting this assistance.
There are about 13,091 sedd buildings in Mumbai. Many of them have become very old and shabby. MBRRB currently has 20,591 transit homes, which are given to people to live temporarily. Such as repair, building collapse, road widening or re -construction.
