Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen made a big upset at the All England Championships, defeating the world number two Jonathan Christie in straight games and made it to the quarterfinals. Lakshya performed a strong performance in just 36 minutes by defeating Christy with a score of 21-13, 21-10. With this victory, Lakshya took her head-to-head record 3-4 against Christie. This was the first time after the Paris Olympics when the third seed Christie and the targets were face to face. Lakshya maintained dominance from the beginning of the match and won without any difficulty.
Indian campaign ends in women’s singles
India’s challenge in women’s singles ended as Malvika Bansod suffered a defeat against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the pre-quarterfinal. 2-time world champion Yamaguchi won the straight game of 21-16, 21-13 in just 33 minutes. With this victory, Yamaguchi’s record against Malavika increased to 4–0. Earlier, PV Sindhu also dropped out of the women’s singles event on Wednesday, which completely eliminated India’s women’s single challenge in the tournament.
India got a shock in Men’s Doubles when the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were forced to withdraw from the match against Ho Naan Shi and Wei Han Jeng of China. The Indian pair had to retire as Chirag’s old back injury emerges. At that time he was playing on a score of 16-21, 2-2.
India’s journey in mixed doubles ends
India’s challenge also ended at the mixed doubles event. The fifth seeded Chinese pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde lost 10–21 12-21 in straight games against Jhee Feng Yan and Shin Wei or were eliminated from the tournament. Lakshya Sen’s spectacular victory has maintained expectations for Indian badminton fans in the tournament, but the Indian challenge in women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles has ended.
