CBI has demanded death sentence for convicted Sanjay Roy.
A big update has come in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. CBI has appealed in the High Court against the death sentence of convict Sanjay Roy against the lower court’s decision. Sealdah Court of Kolkata had convicted Sanjay Roy in this case on Saturday and on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment.
The court had said that convicted Sanjay Roy will have to remain in jail till his death. Apart from this, a fine of Rs 50 thousand has also been imposed on him. The judge has also ordered the state government to pay Rs 17 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family.
Court said- this is not the rarest of rare case
Let us tell you that Sanjay Roy, convicted of rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the night of August 8 at RG Kar Medical College-Hospital in Kolkata, was sentenced to life imprisonment (jail till death) and fined Rs 50,000. Sealdah Court Judge Anirban Das, while pronouncing the sentence at 2:45 pm on Monday, said, ‘This is not the rarest of rare case. Death penalty cannot be given.
The court directed the West Bengal government to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family. However the family refused to accept it. Before giving the verdict at 12:30 pm, the court heard the words of the accused Sanjay, CBI and the victim’s family. Said to Sanjay- It has been told of which crimes you are guilty.
What did Sanjay’s family say?
The court had convicted Sanjay on January 18. On the 164th day of the incident (January 20), a 160-page verdict was given on the punishment. CBI and the victim’s family had sought death penalty. Sanjay’s family said- even if he is hanged. We will not appeal against the decision. Sanjay’s mother said that I understand the pain of that girl’s parents, I also have daughters.
